Patriot Company (NJROTC), Finish First at 18th Consecutive Drill Meet
At their most recent drill meet on March 2, the cadets of Liberty High School’s Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) – Patriot Company, finished first in all competitive categories and won their 18th consecutive drill meet. They were also crowned the Puget Sound Division Champions for the fourth consecutive year. There are currently 98 students involved in Liberty’s NJROTC program, led by Captain John Deehr, and Chief Matthew Spears.
Cadets competed in a variety of drills including Color Guard, Armed and Unarmed Drill, Physical Fitness, Academics, Sporter and Precision Air Rifle.
“The cadets work incredibly hard, many practicing before and after school, on weekends, and during breaks to hone their skills in multiple disciplines,” shared Captain Deehr. He added, “Chief Spears and I are incredibly proud of the work they’ve put in and the success they’ve achieved.”
Liberty’s NJROTC academic team also qualified for the Joint Leadership and Academic Bowl National Championships, which will be held in Washington D.C. at the end of June. This is the second consecutive year, and third in the last four years, they’ve qualified for the championships.
These dedicated cadets will head to Oregon City, Oregon the weekend of March 15 to compete for the Northwest Drill and Rifle Conference Championship. Good luck in Oregon, Liberty NJROTC!

In the sleet and rain, Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Lillian Toepfer (9th grade) pushes to complete the mile run of the physical fitness competition. Cadet Toepfer was awarded the Ironwoman Award as the female with the highest overall fitness score.
